The Pros and Cons of Invisible Fences for Dogs | VCA Animal Hospital

We’ve heard great things from dog owners who are currently using an invisible fence system, specifically, the owner of a Chocolate Lab, the owner of a Jack Russell Terrier, and the owner of a Great Dane.

Provide your dog with the special training necessarily to get used to the invisible fence system.

I have a German shepherd/ catahoula mix that initially trained to our invisible fence very quickly- no running through after people walking or when we would walk past the perimeter. The other day she was playing with a neighbors dog and followed him out of the boundary. Now it seems that the. Shock doesn’t even effect her. I’ve tried retraining her on the leash and she turns away as soon as she hears beeping but as soon as I let go of the leash she goes through. Any ideas on how to stop this?

I wish you luck because these invisible fences give big dogs a lot of freedom. I’ve personally been scared to death several times while out walking my own dog on a leash. Out of nowhere, I’ve had dogs charging full speed at us, scaring me to death, thinking the dog was about to attack my dog. They run right up to about 2 feet before the sidewalk. Then, after they stop and I have a chance to calm down, I see the tiny sign saying Invisible Fence. Well, I personally think this is very un-neighborly. I’ve also seen a child coming home from school, also being charged by a dog with an IF. The child screamed, then ran away from the dog, right into the street, where a car was approaching. This child could have been very seriously hurt, because of someone’s IF. Not cool. Please consider an IF from ALL angles before installing one. With a traditional fence, people can see that barrier, which puts their mind much more at ease. With an IF, there is no physical barrier in sight, which can and has caused many scary moments for people.

I am contemplating a purchase of an invisible fence for our lake home. We visit there several times throughout the year, mostly in the summer months for a week of so and then return to our permanent residence, where we have a cedar fenced in yard. I am wondering if, after the proper training, our two dogs (both Chihuahuas) will remember the boundaries at the lake, since they have a physical fence to contain them most of the time? Will they get confused about where they are and have a hard time staying in the containment area when they visit the lake property?
