Long-lived dogs advertise good temperament and training, since dogs with behavior and temperament problems generally have short life expectancies. Check to see that your prospective puppy's parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and other relations are still alive and healthy, or that they died at a ripe old age. Conscientious breeders will have telephone numbers readily available of previous puppy buyers and of the breeders of the other dogs in your prospective puppy's pedigree. If the breeder is not eager to share information regarding life expectancy and the incidence of breed-specific diseases, look elsewhere. You will eventually find a breeder who will accommodate your concerns. Before you open your heart to a young pup, you certainly want to maximize the likelihood that the two of you will be spending a long and healthy life together.

Dog Training Tips - Dog Training - Pedigree Ireland Eye Dog Foundation trains German Shepherds to be our guide dogs, both male and female. The dogs come from a variety of sources. Eye Dog's breeding program and a network of generous German Shepard breeders provide the majority of the adult dogs, and all of the puppies for the foster family program. Family homes, and occasionally, rescue organization also donate adult dogs for training. Most of the dogs have working dogs of various types in their pedigree which is good for development of our guide dogs. All dogs, regardless of background, must pass medical screening as well as a suitability evaluation before starting training as a guide dog.

This is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. The program is open to all dogs, pedigree and mixed breed. The CGC test is not a competition. It does not require the dog to perform with precision rather to a high standard. The AKC now recognizes the successful completion of the CGC test as an official title and owners can apply for that recognition. Our CGC Class is created to help owners and their dogs strengthen their bond, polish skills learned in previous training classes and prepare for the CGC test. During the multi-week class all aspects of the program will be covered and each exercise will be reviewed and practiced.
